The Chevrolet Express is a lineup of full-size and passenger vans initially manufactured by General Motors and were known as GMC Savana. The successor to that original van lineup has evolved into a passenger and cargo van, which is what is known today as the Chevy Express. This full-size van comes in various body styles, from two-door cargo vans to four-door passenger vans. Since they’ve evolved from being a cargo van into a passenger-type van, evaluating the Chevy Express safety rating is crucial to determine how well it can keep its passengers safe from unwanted collisions and impact.
Design, Engine, and Performance
The Chevy Express body design has improved aerodynamics than the previous model years. It drew inspiration from the Chevy Astro mid-size van for its exterior styling, while the grille is inspired by many of Chevy’s pickup trucks. With its various exterior styling inspirations, the Express vans offer a design advancement within its segment while keeping its functionality, especially as it was created initially as a cargo van before passenger van options were introduced.
Meanwhile, there are five engine options for the original Chevy Express. The standard engine for the Express vans is the same as the C/K pickup trucks, which is the 4.3L V6 engine. Safety Comes First in the Chevy Express
Although it started as a cargo van, the Chevy Express became a passenger van. Chevrolet understands that safety is paramount, especially as these vans transform from cargo to passenger.
The Chevy Express has many standard safety features, including a rear vision camera, rear park assist, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and side blind zone alert. Another standard feature is the anti-lock braking system, which modulates the pressure applied to the brakes to prevent unwanted swerving when applying emergency brakes.
Speaking of unwanted motion, the Chevy Express also features a stability control system. This feature reduces the engine power to prevent a collision. And, of course, several airbags, including front, side, and overhead airbags, are installed.
With a growing number of vehicle thefts, manufacturers have also incorporated safety features to prevent this from happening. The van’s engine is disabled unless the original key provided by the manufacturer is used to start the engine. Even though it isn’t the most aesthetic-looking van, the Express does not cut corners in delivering safety and tech features that enhance functionality and safety.
Chevy Express Safety Rating
The Chevy Express safety rating from the top agencies is limited, and not all variants have been tested. However, it is important to use the information provided by those agencies that have tested the Express vans to get an idea of how well they perform during a crash.
The NHTSA has rated only the rollover crash test for the Chevy Express. The rollover rating is three stars out of five. It had a rollover risk rate of 29.20% but did not tip over during the crash test. The frontal and side crash test rating on the Chevy Express is not available.
Meanwhile, the IIHS has no safety rating for the Chevy Express because the agency has not tested it.
The NCAP Chevy Express safety rating is three stars on the rollover crash test for the 2019 Chevy Express. It tested three variants of the 2019 Chevy Express, all passenger van variants up to the 15-passenger van. The van has not yet been tested for the front (passenger and driver side) and side crashes.

However, various factors can affect how long the Express vans last, such as the engine type and the type of driving or intended use. Some vans last only 175,000 miles, but others can keep running up to 500,000 miles.
